Getting to know me

ADHD is your superpower? Tell me more …

A couple of months ago, my husband mentioned that I should use my ADHD to my advantage by saving enjoyable, fun activities to do after I had completed admin, cleaning or marking. When the boring activities were over, I could then work on classroom decor, reading, journaling, etc to my heart’s content.

It seemed like a good idea at the time and it is a great idea, but at that time, I was still getting used to my meds and I don’t think that it was working fully for me yet. This meant I was still struggling to focus and find the motivation to do the less desirable or boring activities.

Earlier this week, I realised that I have accomplished this. I had spent the morning doing some shopping and when I came home, one of our cats had been sick in the lounge. I had planned to do some journaling when I got home. I am currently working on my diary for the 2022 school year. The smell of coffee and ideas for the journal was already on my mind as I walked into the house. Instead of just unpacking the shopping and then making myself some coffee, I unpacked the groceries, cleaned up the cat mess and washed my hands.

Afterwards, I started making my coffee and whilst busy with this task, I realised that I was following Nathan’s suggestion from all those months ago. Here’s to hopefully scoring a brownie point or two for actually remembering the conversation, LOL. (People with ADHD will know how difficult it is to remember and recall conversations unexpectedly).

I’m hoping to strengthen this superpower over the coming school year. Those who know me know that I am notoriously bad at doing my admin on time. Towards the end of last year, I found that it wasn’t such a struggle for me anymore. So this year I am looking forward to a school year where admin gets done on time and I have more time to prepare for lessons and do the more creative parts of my job.

Happy teacher, happy life, right? We hope this is true, fingers crossed. I’ll keep you updated on that.
